Most authors treat their back cover blurb like a school book report. They start with the setting, introduce four different characters, and try to explain the entire magic system. By the time the reader gets to the second paragraph, they’ve already moved on to the next book.
The hard truth: Your blurb is not a summary. It is a sales landing page. Its only job is to create an "Open Loop" in the reader’s mind that can only be closed by reading Chapter One.
1. The "Status Quo" Hook (Sentence 1-2)
You must establish the "Normal" world, but it has to be a version of normal that is already under threat. Don't tell us your character is a baker; tell us they are a baker with a secret that could hang them.
-
The Mistake: "John is a detective in London who likes coffee."
-
The Masterclass: "Detective John Tallis has spent twenty years sweeping the shadows of London, but he’s never seen a crime scene as clean as this one."
2. The Inciting Incident (The "Until One Day")
This is where the "Normal" world shatters. This needs to be a hard pivot. Use strong, active verbs. Avoid "is" and "was." Use "crumbles," "shatters," "ignites," or "betrays."
3. The Stakes (The "Price of Failure")
If the hero doesn't do [The Thing], what is lost? This isn't just about the world ending—it’s about the character's internal world ending. Personal stakes always outperform global stakes. Don't tell us the kingdom will fall; tell us the hero will lose their last remaining family member.
4. The Choice (The "Sinker")
Never end a blurb with a spoiler, and never end it with a cliché like "Will he survive?" Instead, end it with a dilemma. A choice between two equally difficult paths. This is what creates the "Open Loop."
-
Example: "To save his daughter, Tallis must break the law he spent a lifetime defending—and the clock is already ticking."
