How I Wrote My First Draft in 7 Weeks: The Power of the Writing Sprint
When I was writing the first draft of FRAGMENTED, it wasn’t a slow, romantic process of waiting for inspiration.
The "Skeleton Draft" was 35,000 words, and I got it done in just under two months. How? By stopping the slow burn and embracing the Writing Sprint.
The Myth of the Writing Day
Most authors block out a few hours to write. What often happens:
-
Hour 1: Checking emails, research "rabbit holes," and making coffee.
-
Hour 2: Writing three sentences, then deleting two of them.
-
Hour 3: Scrolling Facebook writing groups to see how everyone else is doing.
-
Hour 4: Intense guilt and one semi-decent paragraph.
The Sprint Solution
A sprint is a 25-minute window of Total Narrative Focus.
The goal isn't quality (that’s for the second draft); the goal is raw volume. By breaking your day into three or four 25-minute sprints, you can often produce more words than a distracted four-hour block.
The Sprint Tracker: Why You Need to Log Your Words
If you don't track it, you can't improve it. By logging your sprints, you’ll start to see patterns:
-
Maybe you’re most productive at 6 AM before the world wakes up.
-
Maybe your "afternoon slump" is actually your best time for dialogue.
-
Maybe you write 2x faster when you listen to specific ambient music.
How to Use the Sprint System:
-
Set the Timer: 25 minutes.
-
The No-Delete Rule: If you write a bad sentence, leave it. Keep moving.
-
Log the Results: Record your start time, end time, and word count.
-
The Break: Take 5 minutes away from the screen. Then, go again.
